What is Social Bookmarking?
Most people will be familiar with the concept of bookmarking - finding a web page that you like saving it to your favourites in your web browser so that you can find it again later. Social bookmarking follows a similar concept - you save links online to a public website and categorise them using "tags" (tags being one word descriptions that describe what the link you are saving is about). For each bookmark saved, you can assign as many tags as you like.
For example, I might save a link to CommerceTuned and use the tags "SEO", "search engine optimisation", "usability" and so on. Good reasons for doing this might be that you wish to share links with colleagues and friends, perhaps you want to access your links from any computer anywhere in the world, or you might just be interested in seeing what other people have bookmarked.
So how do you go about starting social bookmarking? You first need to register with a social bookmarking site. Over the past couple of years the number of social bookmarking websites has grown, but three of the most popular are:
Once you have created a user account, you can add buttons to your web browser that will allow you to quickly and easily save your favourite web pages to your account on the social bookmarking site.
Since the individual who saves a bookmark gets to assign tags to describe that bookmark, this becomes a crude method of user classification or an open ended naming system. This is called "folksonomy". It is conceivable that over time, social bookmarking could produce more relevant results to searchers than search engines, meaning that we move away from the traditional methods of classifying and managing information.
